Elli Lestas - As Above, So Below

Elli Lestas - As Above, So Below

When Elli contacted us with her series 'As Above, So Below', we knew we were seeing something unique. Born in London and raised in Bromley, Ellie went on to study at Camberwell College of Art and received her MA  in Fine Art at Goldsmiths. She then moved to Paphos, Cyprus in 1996 and became involved in setting up a plant nursery, and gained an interest in collecting and germinating seeds. After a long break she returned to her art practise in 2012.

The series is part of a recent photographic experimentation. Her work has been influenced by the uncertainty of Quantum Mechanics along with her ongoing fascination with nature's resonance and fractals. Within her work she seeks to understand where the energy of creation comes from, and believes the answer is in science.

"Creativity to me iswhen a pure and authenticconnection happens betweenan artist’sconsciousness and a metaphysical force that I cannot explain. When an artists is connected in this way great art can happen andin all forms like painting ,music, drama or writing.

I have been interested in the energy of creation for some time and think thatsome explanations can be found in Quantum Mechanics and resonance theories.

In addition to creativitythere is also the question of the interplay between the creators and their audience. A resonance has to occur for the art to be appreciated and sometimes one workcan be on thelevel with many people."

"One of the artists I really admire is Richard Long. The direct way that his work connects with the earth and the choice of materials is very appealing to me. The circular works have a great attraction because when I start a drawing I am alone in my studio and I draw a circle from which all the rest develops."
