Lennart Normann - Scrapes
These images were taken between 2016/17 in Lennart's hometown of Berlin and on two short trips around northern Germany. Lennart describes his work as exploring minimalism, negative spaces, a certain "less is more philosophy" that he also tries to apply to his personal life. He shoots only on film.
After a number of years spent working in a 'serious' job in healthcare, he decided to take his hobby of photography to the next level and studied at university. He graduated two years ago and decided straight away that he didn't want to be a wedding photographer. After self publishing his first two books and taking part in group exhibitions, he opened his first solo show last week.
"Minimalism calms me and I enjoy the act of creating this kind of visually pleasing and "clearing" Content. "
What does creativity mean to you?
"Hard question.. I think creativity in general is the ability to think outside of the box and find solutions that you don't always see at first. So it has a lot to do with a certain "freedom" of mind that you think for yourself and not just follow what others do /say and also with improvising- so creativity seems to be a good indicator for intelligence as well.
In terms of photography and art, I would say, you can see when a piece of work is "planned" and creativity is needed for the idea as well as for the implementation.
It feels most creative to me when this process of idea and the necessary actions to realise the image happen at the very same moment- ( sorry for my english btw.- hope you get what I mean) and sometimes you are lucky to experience this "creating- trance" where you forget everything around you .
I also enjoy the process of improvising and of "using what is there", for me, this leads to playing around and so to learning."
